On the Subject of Love, Part 1

Goddess Tarot

I’ve been thinking about love a lot lately, and the choices people make in their lives to get it, or lose it, or sustain it. During my half century (so far) on Earth I’ve seen a lot of stuff, and probably done it too! The last couple years have been hard on some relationships in my friend sphere in particular.
This subject comes up a lot in Tarot readings. I have been surprised to realize that I’m now at peace with a weird truth about people: They will do some really ill-advised things in hopes of receiving love, or sex, or just to not be alone.
I have been reading some books by other Tarot readers lately. They’ve been really good – I’ll review them another time. But it has made me reflect on some readings I have done that highlight my point.
Some years ago when I was doing readings at our hospitality room at a convention, a young man came to see me. He was probably in his early 20’s. He had been on a vacation a couple months before, and during that trip met a woman he became very smitten with. She was at least ten years his senior, and married. They had stayed in contact. He wanted to know if he should move halfway across the country to be with her. Unsurprisingly, the cards said NO. It was not vague, there was no question. BIG NO. Here’s the part that threw me: his follow-up question was “What if it did it anyway?” His clarifier was the Death card.

Shadowscapes Tarot
The reason I knew that the Shadowscapes Tarot was the one for me was when I saw the Death card. It is a phoenix. I think that sums things up really well. You can be reborn from this ordeal, but you will burn yourself alive first! I told him it would involve painful change. I sometimes wonder what he decided to do.
I think many of us have been in those relationships that we burn ourselves alive for. And in the end we are changed by them. Hopefully wiser, sometimes not so much. But we keep looking and hoping anyway.
I hope you are all taking care of yourselves, and let the fire smolder but not burn you out.
